Practical Codes is published at practicalcodes.org. The contact for privacy requests is [email protected]. This policy matches the scripts on the pages you are reading: it names each third party, what it stores, how long it stays, and the basis we rely on.
Default loading, and what Reject does
We load analytics and advertising by default. A visitor with no stored choice is treated as granted: Google Analytics 4, Microsoft Clarity and the two Adsterra units are requested on the first screen, before you touch the banner. The banner is a notice and a withdrawal tool, not a gate. Press Reject and the ads and the session recording stop, the analytics tag is told to stop storing identifiers, and the choice is remembered for 180 days. Press Accept and they stay on. Either way, Cookie settings in the footer reopens the banner so you can change your mind.
What loads, and what it stores
- Our own pages, fonts, and images come from practicalcodes.org. These are needed to show the site and set no tracking cookie.
- Google Analytics 4 (Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC). Measurement ID G-LEB0PFEPSN, loaded by default from googletagmanager.com with hits sent to google-analytics.com. It sets the _ga cookie (2 years) and the _ga_LEB0PFEPSN cookie (2 years), and reads a client identifier to count visits and page views. Legal basis: your consent, and our legitimate interest in measuring whether the guides are read. Reject sends analytics_storage: denied and stops the loader, so the next page view fetches no gtag.js from googletagmanager.com.
- Microsoft Clarity (Microsoft Corporation). Project z8sb0xuejh, loaded by default from clarity.ms; the SDK is fetched from scripts.clarity.ms and recordings are posted to *.clarity.ms/collect. It sets the _clck cookie (1 year), the _clsk cookie (1 day), and may set CLID, ANONCHK, MR, MUID and SM. It records clicks, scrolls and page renditions, with form inputs masked. Legal basis: your consent. Reject stops the loader and removes the tag.
- Adsterra (Adsterra Ltd). Publisher 3403020, website 6177111, with two page units: NativeBanner_1 (unit 32103979) and SocialBar_1 (unit 32103980). Both are requested by default from bicea.org and its creative CDNs. Adsterra and its demand partners may set cookies and read device identifiers to choose and cap ads; those cookies are set by their domains, not by us, and typically last up to 1 year. Adult ads are switched off for this site. Legal basis: your consent. Reject removes the units and remembers the refusal.
- YouTube (Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC). The trailer is a facade: no YouTube request is made until you press the play image. Pressing it loads the player from youtube.com, which may set its own cookies (for example YSC and VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE) and receives your IP address and the page you came from. Legal basis: your consent, given by pressing play.
Storage on your device
The consent record lives in local storage under the key localStorage. It holds the choice (granted or denied), whether ads and analytics are on, and an expiry 180 days out. Closing the floating Social Bar writes a second key, localStorage_social_closed, also for 180 days, so the bar does not return on the next page view. We set no first-party tracking cookie of our own, and we do not use these keys for anything except remembering your choices.
Purposes, retention, and legal bases
- Measurement: count visits and see which guides are used. Retention: 14 months in Google Analytics 4, after which event-level data is deleted.
- Session recording and heatmaps: find broken layouts and confusing steps. Retention: 30 days for recordings in Microsoft Clarity, longer for aggregated heatmaps.
- Advertising: fund the site with two page units. Retention: set by Adsterra and its partners, typically up to 12 months.
- Remembering your choice: the local-storage keys above, 180 days. Legal basis: consent for analytics, recording and advertising storage; legitimate interest in remembering a choice you already made and in keeping the pages readable.
Your choices and opt-outs
- Cookie settings in the footer, or Reject in the banner, withdraws advertising and recording consent on this site and is remembered for 180 days.
- A Global Privacy Control signal is treated as Reject. A Do Not Track flag is honoured only where the browser exposes it as Global Privacy Control.
- Personalised advertising: turn it off for Google at adssettings.google.com, and for many other vendors at youronlinechoices.com and optout.aboutads.info. Adsterra's own policy at adsterra.com/privacy-policy explains how to opt out of its partners.
- Browser controls: block third-party cookies or clear site data; the site keeps working, only the remembered choice is lost and the banner asks again.
- Email [email protected] to access, correct, or delete a message you sent us. We keep correspondence only as long as the thread needs.
We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child emailed us, write to the same address and we will delete the thread. This policy changes by editing this page and its updated date; continued use after that date means you have the new text.
FAQ
Do you sell data?
No. We do not sell personal data, and we do not run an ad auction of our own. Adsterra is the only advertising network on this site, and it receives requests for the two ad units described below.
How do I change my choice?
Use Cookie settings in the footer. Reject turns advertising storage and session recording off and is remembered for 180 days. Analytics also stops storing its identifiers and is not fetched again after Reject, and a Global Privacy Control signal counts as Reject.
Is anything loaded before I choose?
Yes. A first visit is treated as granted: Google Analytics 4, Microsoft Clarity and the Adsterra units load on the first screen, and the banner only tells you and lets you withdraw. No Accept click is needed for them to run.
